Shastri Vyakarana is a traditional Sanskrit degree focused on Vyakarana, which means Sanskrit grammar. You study the rules of the language and the texts that explain them, mostly in Sanskrit. It leads to teaching and research in Sanskrit, or to further study at Acharya level.
For CUET UG 2026, 3 central universities list Shastri Vyakarana: BHU, CSU and NSU. The papers asked most often are Sanskrit and Knowledge Tradition and Practices of India. BHU asks for Sanskrit. CSU accepts Sanskrit or Knowledge Tradition and Practices of India as the domain paper, and offers the course as a three-year Shastri or a four-year Shastri Pratishtha. NSU asks for any one language paper and any one domain paper, and prefers candidates with the Sanskrit paper. NSU teaches Shastri only in Sanskrit.
Eligibility is not the usual Class 12 rule. BHU accepts Madhyama or 10+2 with 50%, with Sanskrit as a passed subject and an age limit of 22 years on 1 July 2026. CSU and NSU also accept traditional qualifications such as Prakshastri and Uttar Madhyama. Tip: take the Sanskrit paper. It works for all three universities.
